The 2024 Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film and nominated for Best Picture, Director, Sound and Screenplay is a great World War II historical drama.
The story is simple. It is about the peaceful family life of a Nazi officer, Hoss, and his wife, Hewitt. They live in a nice house with a garden and children. There is a large concentration camp near their house. They hear the constant sound of gunfire. To their annoyance, the remains of burned Jewish bodies float into the lake next to the house.
Hoss’s main task is to select the workers from the concentration camp and to poison the remaining 600,000 Hungarian Jews. This job is difficult for him. Not because he feels it. He has to clean the ashes, fill the number of bodies to be burned daily, and make the gassing process convenient.
When he is promoted and transferred, his wife is sad, but the family is very happy when their house is moved back to the Jewish community.
The film depicts a simple dream of a Nazi family without even thinking about the Jewish problem, so you can see the proverb “Who will die if they die?” in the most vivid way.
The brutal and beautiful scenes of this film do not show the hard work of these cruel days, but rather the family living a simple life while doing ordinary office work. You will feel what they want to show as you watch. Watch it.
