There Will Be Blood

The year is 1898. A silver prospector is found in the fields of New Mexico. He has already found a piece of silver ore as a reward for his hard work. He has finished his work and is trying to climb back up the mountain. However, he has an accident and his left leg is amputated. But he is able to climb back up to the surface.

His name is ‘Daniel Plainview’. In the early twentieth century, with the development of society, fuel has become more valuable than jewelry. Therefore, people have started to crawl on the ground where they think there will be oil. In fact, oil exploration is a dangerous job. In those days, it was even worse. It was dangerous and challenging to bring the black gold liquid from the underground to the surface. Without modern mining equipment like today, there was not enough air to breathe in a hole several feet underground, using only human strength. They have to dig in the middle of the smell of gas. Even so, there are no occupational hazards such as pit collapses, overloads and injuries.

Is that it? What will happen? The physical and mental strength of oil workers. These are not perfect. The kind of work that pays for itself with life and soul.

‘Daniel’ can be considered a man born in a bad time. He has grown up in an era where people trample on others for their own good, and he has learned to look at everything with hatred. His whole heart is also filled with the desire to win and doubts. The kind of person who will beat you ten times if you hit him once. The kind of person who will hit you with a fist and hit you with a knife. He has become a really tough person.

So, ‘Daniel’ started an oil exploration business using the silver ore he had been able to mine. One day, a friend of his in the same industry died in an accident at work. Since he had a son, Daniel adopted the boy. When he grew up, he was able to teach him to love oil like him.

Over the years, Daniel’s business became more and more successful. At one point, when he noticed a new area that every oilman could see, Daniel lost all humanity and became a cold-blooded villain who used cunning to eliminate his rivals…

Based on the 1926 novel Oil! by Upton Sinclair, a Western-style film, There Will Be Blood is one of the best films of the 21st century and was directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, one of the best directors in Hollywood today, who directed films like Magnolia and The Master.

The cinematography is nothing special. The oil refinery fire scene is well worth the Oscar. These shots took us to the oil fields and smelled the crude oil.

Although it was a Western style, we did not see the usual cowboys and heroes, but only a cruel and inhuman oil tycoon. The person who brought this character to life, who worships money, is Sir Daniel Day-Lewis, who is considered to be the best actor alive.

Daniel Plainview brought Daniel Day-Lewis, who is polite in the outside world and who can transform into a different person when he is on set, his second Oscar and was also considered the best actor in his entire acting career.

Since Daniel Day-Lewis is a method actor, he stays true to his character even after being written, so I think that Paul Dano, who plays Eli, is more afraid of Daniel Plainview than Eli is of Daniel Plainview. It is thanks to director Paul Thomas Anderson and actor Daniel Day-Lewis, who created such a story and character, that we will never forget a cruel villain from an oil field where the smell of blood and crude oil mixed together.
